Math
- Small course sizes enable students to work closely with faculty and receive personal attention. The mathematics department offers many undergraduate research opportunities with award-winning faculty, as well as strong faculty advising.
- New Paltz chapters of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Association for Women in Mathematics, and the American Mathematical Society enable students to explore different areas in mathematics outside the classroom. The chapters often organize lectures, trips to undergraduate conferences, and events such as the Integration Bee (a calculus competition).
- The ongoing Math and Cookies lecture series exposes students to a wide variety of topics, presented by faculty, visiting scholars, or advanced students.
- Our Math Lab on campus hires several of our top math students to be tutors each semester. As tutors, our Math and Math Ed majors are able to deepen their understanding of material as they work to explain topics to other students. Math Lab tutors learn teamwork, communication skills, responsibility, leadership skills, teaching strategies and interpersonal skills.
- Any student taking math courses can seek assistance at the Math Lab. It is open 42 hours per week and employs both adjuncts and Math or Math Ed majors who have been carefully selected for their knowledge, patience, and desire to help others.
- Our 4+1 program allows students to graduate in 5 years with both a Mathematics major and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree that completes all coursework required for permanent certification as a high school teacher.
- A mathematics degree from New Paltz encompasses both applied and theoretical interests, and provides exceptional preparation for future careers in different fields.
