Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies
- The Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies faculty keep in constant contact with their alumni. Many students go on to graduate school for counseling, social work (including working with battered women), and health services. Other graduates work in public health, education, and politics/activism.
- In this small major, many students are in the same classes and get to know each other well. This creates a sense of identity and coherence within the program and the College. Students of this rigorous program learn how to think critically, write well, and work in a multicultural world.
- Two of the program's faculty members, Heather Hewitt and Denise Oliver-Velez, were named Teachers of the Year by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences in 2016. Additionally, program secretary Concetta (Cookie) Chandler was a recipient of the 2016 Classified Staff Presidential Recognition Award.
- Students gain valuable experience through participation in practicums, special courses, and local and on-campus internships. The program’s fieldwork and outreach include: presentation of educational programming in public schools; developing conferences; and conducting advocacy work.
- The program began in the 1970s, making it one of the oldest such programs in the SUNY system. Faculty members are well-rounded and come from several different disciplines including history, economics, and sociology.
- The program runs a large biannual women’s studies conference on campus, which is open to the public and brings many alumni back to campus. The program also hosts a “Life After Women’s Studies” event for seniors every spring, which brings alumni back to campus to speak with students, as well as multiple campuswide faculty research colloquia each year.
