Alicia Hyndman ’93 (Black Studies, Communication & Media)

New York State Assembly, District 29

As a member of the New York State Assembly, I currently represent the 29th District encompassing the neighborhoods of Laurelton, Rosedale, St. Albans, Addisleigh Park, Hollis, Springfield Gardens and Jamaica in Queens, New York. I work with my colleagues in government to collectively legislate a roughly $269 billion NYS Budget. This budget affects everything from our schools, transportation, environment, health, infrastructure, small businesses, food, and other goods and services that involve the residents of the Empire State.

Being a student at SUNY New Paltz provided me with an education that has opened up doors and opportunities that I could never have imagined if I did not further my education beyond high school. That is why it is my honor to serve as the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Higher Education. 

My studies, extracurricular activities, on campus employment, and friendships helped to create a foundation on which to build leadership skills as well as great team skills. I was a resident assistant, worked nights with Campus Safety, worked with Student Activities during the summer, pledged a national sorority, wrote for a school newspaper, and chaired the Black Weekend Association. The four years I spent at SUNY New Paltz have everything to do with the person I am today. I entered the school only knowing one person and left with a huge family.
