Where can I work and what if I cannot find work?
You can work anywhere in the United States
All work must be related to the major field of study
You must work a minimum of 20 hours per week (paid and/or unpaid) to be considered employed
During the 12 months of OPT, you are not allowed to be unemployed for more than 90 days. You are considered out of status if you are unemployed for more than 90 days.
What kind of work is considered employment on OPT?
Regular full-time/ part-time (minimum of 20 hours per week) paid work for one or more employers
Paid work for multiple short-time employers
Work for hire- contract work (employees usually receive a 1099 from the employer)
Volunteer work or unpaid internship-as long as work does not violate US labor laws
Employment through an employment agency
Self-employed business owner. Students may start their own business. The student should have the proper business license and business must be related to the major field of study
