International student application process

The basic requirement for admission is a high school degree and a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (or an 85% grade average or higher).

  4. Local and state board scores, if available 
  5. Admission essay (personal statement)** 
  6. 1 letter of recommendation***

*Full admission requires the submission of official transcripts and test scores. If you are admitted to the undergraduate program, you must request official copies of your transcripts and test scores be sent by courier to:

An official transcript (documentation of a student's permanent academic record including the courses that have been completed and the marks that have been received for those courses).  If your school or national education department does not provide transcripts, please provide a certified record of the courses and examinations taken, this would include Government Examination certificates (such as GCSE-"O" Level, IGCSE, and “A" Level). You must submit official secondary/high school transcripts - in the original language and in a translated English version. 

** The essay that is a required part of the SUNY Supplemental Application or the Common Application is acceptable. You may also use the SUNY International Applicant Essay form - form for your essay. You may choose any topic for your autobiographical essay. 

*** A letter of recommendation from an academic teacher or school counselor.

If you were admitted and attended a college/university (inside or outside of the US) you are considered a transfer student.  

The basic requirement for admission is a high school degree and a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale.

  3. Official high school transcripts** 
  4. Proof of English language proficiency 

*We recommend that transfer students obtain an evaluation of your non-US university transcript(s) from a credential evaluation service that is a member in good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Service (NACES). You can visit naces.org for information about these services. 

**You must also submit your high school transcript in both the original language and a translated English version if you have less than 45 completed college credits.

Transfer Admission to Specific Majors 

Transfer applicants with less than 45 completed credits may either apply to a major or apply as "Undeclared." 

However, transfer applicants with 45 or more completed credits must apply directly to a major program. "Undeclared" is not a choice" in this case. Many majors have specific admission requirements.* 

Please review the requirements below for your intended major: 

Art 

A minimum GPA of 2.75 and a successful portfolio review** 

Visual Arts Education 

A minimum of a 3.0 and a successful portfolio review** 

Music 

A minimum GPA of 2.75 and a successful music audition/interview** 

Theatre Arts 

A minimum GPA of 2.75 and a successful theatre audition/interview** 

Adolescence Education 

A minimum GPA of 3.0 and a “B” or better in English Composition I and II. 

Adolescence Education - Mathematics 

the above, plus "B-" or better in either Calculus I or Calculus II. 

Biology 

A minimum GPA of 2.75 and must have completed General Biology I & II, General Chemistry I & II, and Pre-Calculus. 

Business (all programs) 

A minimum GPA of 2.75; applicants must have completed English Composition I and II, Microeconomics or Macroeconomics and completion of a SUNY General Education mathematics course. 

Communication Disorders 

A minimum GPA of 3.0. 

Early Childhood/Childhood Education 

A minimum GPA of 3.0 and a “B” or better in English Composition I and II. 

Early Childhood/Childhood Education - Biology Concentration 

A minimum GPA of 3.0 and a “B” or better in English Composition I and II, and must have completed General Biology I & II, General Chemistry I & II, and Pre-Calculus. 

Early Childhood/Childhood Education - Mathematics  
Concentration 

A minimum GPA of 3.0 and a “B” or better in English Composition I and II, and a "B-" or better in either Calculus I or Introduction to Proof. 

Mathematics 

A minimum GPA of 2.75 and grade of "B-" or better in Calculus I or a grade of "B-" or better in Calculus II. 

Psychology 

A minimum GPA of 2.75, a “C” or better in General Psychology and completion of a SUNY General Education mathematics course with a "C" or better. 

All majors within the School of Science & Engineering 

The passing completion of Pre-Calculus. 


*SUNY New Paltz reserves the right to change admission criteria for specific majors without notice.

**Students will receive information from admissions regarding portfolio submission, audition, or interview instructions.

Prospective international students for whom English is not the native language, and any applicant whose undergraduate degree is from a country where English is not the main language of instruction, are required to demonstrate English Language Proficiency.

Conditional Admission 

The Haggerty English Language Pathway Program 

Students applying to undergraduate programs* at SUNY New Paltz may be admitted without proof of English proficiency if they meet all other admissions standards. Upon arrival, these students will be tested and placed into academic or ESL courses as needed. These students will be: 

  • issued an Undergraduate Pathway I-20 from SUNY New Paltz. The I-20 will indicate that the student is not yet proficient in English and that she or he will be tested for proficiency upon arrival. 
  • eligible to enroll in an academic course if they are placed in our advanced levels and meet the required criteria. 
  • eligible to undertake a full-time program of degree study upon completion of the Haggerty English Language Program (HELP) or upon achieving the required proficiency based on TOEFL or IELTS test scores. 
  • invited to the Summer 5-week HELP program. This optional program is a way to get a head start on developing language proficiency.

Students will receive their bill to their hawkmail.newpaltz.edu account close to orientation, and can pay upon arrival. Methods of acceptable payment can be found here on the Student Accounts website

SUNY New Paltz is proud to offer the #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship, which recognizes promising international students with a vision for enhancing intercultural understanding. SUNY New Paltz will select two first-year undergraduate international students to receive an annual, renewable scholarship to cover 50% of their tuition beginning in the Fall 2021 semester.

Note about Financial Documentation:

US Citizenship and Immigration Services requires evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of an international student's academic program. Official financial/bank statements indicating sufficient funds are required to support one's education at SUNY New Paltz for a period of at least one year.  

Bank statements amounts should total no less than $38,858.00 USD, to cover all school fees, as well as additional books, supplies and personal expenses. Financial documentation must be in English and must be in United States Dollars (USD) or shown at the applicable conversion rate.   

Submit the SUNY Foreign Student Financial Form with copies of financial documents verifying the availability of funding for undergraduate study in the United States to intadmissions@newpaltz.eduAfter we receive this and verify it, we will send you the I-20 document needed for your visa interview via DHL Express, and your SEVIS ID number and DHL tracking number will be sent to you by email.
