Office of Field Experiences

Student Teaching Guidelines

Student teaching placements are guided by program requirements based on New York State certification regulations and on the School of Education's conceptual framework. The Office of Field Experiences seeks volunteer cooperating teachers to mentor candidates so that the depth and breadth of their experiences will develop targeted knowledge, skills, and dispositions of the profession. The OFE works closely with candidates to ensure clinically rich placements and considers the needs of the student.

Student teaching candidates must apply one semester in advance of the start of student teaching. Student teaching candidates will attend a MANDATORY Student Teaching Application Meeting the semester before they plan on student teaching.  The Office of Field Experiences will send students an invitation to the meeting one month prior to the meeting date.  During this meeting a student teaching application will be completed together to ensure timely submission.

Students must complete ALL degree coursework before their student teaching semester begins.  Candidates are not permitted to take any additional classes while they are student teaching and not permitted to return and finish coursework after completion of their student teaching semester.  Student teaching candidates must have a minimum GPA of a 3.0 to be accepted for placement.  All candidates must receive approval from their program advisors before they are able to register for student teaching.
