2023 Scholarship Recipients

Major: Early Childhood Education (Spanish)

About Study Abroad Scholarship: "During the Spring 2023 semester, with the help of the Honors Experiential Scholarship, I had the wonderful opportunity to study abroad at the University of Oviedo in Oviedo, Spain. I lived in the heart of the small city, experiencing firsthand Spanish culture, food, music, holidays, and traditions, while also getting a chance to improve my Spanish-speaking abilities. Since I am an Early Childhood/Childhood Education major with a concentration in Spanish and hope to become an ENL (English as a New Language) educator, my time in Oviedo was incredibly valuable and served as an amazing learning experience."

Majors: Visual Arts & General Business

About Internship Experience: "For the past year, I have been working as an intern at Hudson Valley CPAs PLLC, a small accounting firm here in New Paltz. This internship has proven to be an exceptional learning experience allowing me to expand upon what I have learned at SUNY New Paltz as a general business major. All in all, I am grateful for what this internship has taught me about accounting, finance, and business management and planning because the skills and knowledge I have gained in these areas can be applied directly to almost any business field of position. Additionally, I also believe that fieldwork is an important step for anyone questioning their field of study or career path and it is a step that I am glad to have taken."

Major: Printmaking

About Study Abroad Experience: "Studying abroad in Spain was a significant stepping stone in my art education. I studied abroad with SUNY Oswego for a month in Madrid, where we stayed at dorms for Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. Although the group was moving about Spain every day for classes, we also eventually used this university's studio space to create our final project. We were a group of twelve students from various SUNY schools taking a studio class about experimental drawing and painting as well as an art history class about Spain. Both courses were mobile, as during studio time we drew various scenes and subjects of Madrid landscapes and art, and for history class, we traveled to places such as Toledo, Cuenca, and Cordoba to learn about their history. The days were dense with learning about fresh ideas, perspectives, and knowledge of the art world, which fortified my passion for being an artist."

Major: Psychology

Minors: Deaf Studies, Disaster Studies, and Social Justice Educational Studies

About Study Abroad Experience: "This past summer I had the opportunity to study abroad in Milan, Italy at The Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC). People say that studying abroad is a once in a lifetime experience and after completing it I truly believe that it is. I can not think of another time where I would be able to do a trip like this. I became so much more knowledgeable about the different cultures and was able to experience firsthand the different teaching modalities in Milan."

Major: Communication Disorders

Minor: Deaf Studies

About Study Abroad Experience: "Studying abroad in Ireland was an unforgettable experience. In the three weeks I was there my dreams became my reality. This study abroad experience was my first time traveling independently as well as out of the country and it taught me a lot about myself and who I am as a student. This learning experience has opened my eyes to all the untraditional ways in which we can learn and has taught me to keep an open mind when it comes to new opportunities."

Major: Communication Studies (Organizational)

Minor: Sociology

About Internship Experience: "This summer, I had the privilege of working at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital in the Community Relations and Marketing Department. My charges ranged everywhere from social media management to sponsorship solicitations. I graduated from the school district that the hospital is in, know people who work there and have been aware of it my whole life. However, this was the first time I really understood the operations and community impact."

Majors: Biology & Astronomy

About Research Experience: "This summer I participated in a highly competitive Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program at Cornell University's Center for Astrophysics and Planetary Science. Throughout the program, I engaged with and often independently led every component of the research process, attended daily meetings and trainings to better equip myself as a scientist, assisted with scientific outreach programs at summers camps in the area, and participated in the Leadership Alliance to grow in my leadership skills while I am in a classroom and in my career. It is difficult to describe how awe-inspiring and humbling the opportunity to work beneath and alongside some of the leading scientists in my field - on research that has never been previously conducted - truly feels. This process has instilled in me a newfound sense of appreciation for how difficult it is to achieve the goals I have, but more importantly  it has given me a sense of confidence in my ability to do so against the odds."

Major: Journalism

About Study Abroad Experience: "I traveled to Siena, Italy for six weeks where I was fully immersed in Italian culture. Studying abroad allowed me to have experiences that I will never forget. It provided me with new perspectives and experiences while taking enriching courses throughout the way. My study abroad was truly like no other trip I have ever been on."
