Required high school coursework
4 units of English
3-4 units of social studies/history
3-4 units of college preparatory mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry)
3-4 units of science (minimum of 3 units of a laboratory science)
2-4 units of a language other than English
These five core courses need to be at the Regents level (NYS), college preparatory (CP) level – or higher (Honors, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, college courses).
Reviewing the high school transcript
We look beyond the posted cumulative high school average. We only factor in the five core courses (see above) in our review. We calculate year-by-year which allows us to see the applicant's particular academic strengths and areas for improvement, as well as an applicant's trends in achievement year-by-year.

The SAT/ACT requirement
The SAT & ACT requirement is waived for the Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024 semesters. However, one of those are required for the accelerated medical programs. We do "superscore."
Important note: We accept electronic submission of scores from the testing agencies and test scores noted as part of the official transcript. We do not accept student score reports or hand-written scores, even if signed by a school official.

Yes, $50. The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
Yes, for applicants who qualify under the Federal Reduced Lunch/Free Lunch program, who would qualify under the financial eligibility guidelines of the NYS Educational Opportunity Program, or who have an extenuating circumstance could be eligible.
The Common Application: Please submit with the application one of the following fee waiver forms- Common Application, College Board, SAT, ACT.
SUNY Common Application: Please submit the SUNY Application Fee Waiver form directly to the SUNY Application Service Center.
The fee waivers can be filled out as a part of the application.
Yes, we annually request mid-year grades from about 40% of our applicants. All Early Action applicants moved to General Freshman Admission must submit mid-year grades. We request mid-year grades, and any other necessary information, directly from the applicant by email. If your school automatically sends mid-year grades, we thank you!
Yes. The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is open only to New York State residents who have been historically academically and socioeconomically disadvantaged. For more information regarding the requirements, please visit our EOP admission website.
Yes. The mission of the New Paltz Honors Program is to provide an enhanced intellectual experience in a climate conducive to interaction among highly motivated students and faculty. This experience seeks to develop and intensify skills from a conceptual point of view in a diverse, multi-disciplinary, analytical environment that nutures independent thinking, creativity, respect and social responsibility. Honors seminars are interdisciplinary and small (15 students).
The Honors Program consists of about 280 students. Students may apply to the Honors Program as freshmen, transfers or continuing students. Honors Program students receive preferential registration, participate in special on- and off-campus activities and events. Those who complete the full scope of the program receive an official Honors Program designation on their final college transcript and their diploma.
Yes and no. Freshmen applicants are reviewed under the general admission criteria. If accepted to SUNY New Paltz, there will be additional portfolio, audition, and/or interview criteria to be accepted into specific majors. Only accepted students will be able to receive this information from the departments. Please encourage your students to research the requirements before they apply.
