If you are currently receiving financial aid in the form of a scholarship, grant, or loan from your home campus, you may be able to continue to receive that same financial aid to apply towards the cost of your participation in a New Paltz Study Abroad program.
New Paltz programs vary in cost and fees. Cost and fees can be found on the brochure page under "budget sheets." The budget sheets are meant to be used as a guideline since costs are subject to change and can fluctuate based on exchange rates.

SUNY New Paltz offers scholarships for Study Abroad experiences through generous contributions. If eligible, these other scholarships can be applied toward your study abroad program. View funds available in the SUNY New Paltz Scholarship Catalog, which can be viewed and downloaded on the SUNY New Paltz Foundation website. These scholarships are for SUNY New Paltz students studying on SUNY New Paltz programs. All eligible students are encouraged to apply.
These scholarships accept applications twice a year. Students studying abroad for the summer, fall, or academic year semester should apply in the spring (typically April). Students studying abroad for the spring or calendar year should apply in the fall (typically September).
Daniel Gonzalez '87 Endowed Travel Scholarship Fund
Eligible students must be full-time, matriculated, participating in a SUNY New Paltz-administered study abroad program to Spain, engaged in a study of Spanish or Spanish language, literature or culture.
Dr. Nancy F. Marino '72 Annual Scholarship for Study in Spain
To be eligible, applications must be full time, matriculated students with a major or minor in Spanish and a concentration in Spanish culture or literature.
Friends of the Asian Studies
Applicants should be engaged in undergraduate involvement in faculty research, independent student research, study abroad, or an internship with the Asia Studies Department approval.
Gary R. Gregg '77 Applied Learning Fund - Study Abroad
Applicants should have attained the class standing of Sophomore or above at the time the award is made. Recipients will be in good standing and should show evidence of service and contribution to the life of the College and/or be active in extracurricular activities, specifically in the School of Business.
Golin-Karlin Travel Award
Recipients of the Golin-Karlin Travel Award will be selected for a maximum award of $1,000 each to support study abroad through SUNY New Paltz.
Helen A. and James T. McShane Memorial Scholarship Annual Fund
This fund is intended to support travel scholarships for students desiring to experience the history, literature, culture and language of Ireland.
Luigi and Anita Traverso Endowment For Italian Studies
The fund provides scholarship support to students who are studying abroad in Italy, first preference will be given to students who are minors in Italian Studies or who are engaged in Italian language learning; other majors and/or minors will be considered secondarily.
Roger and Barbara Bowen Scholarship
This award will be presented to a full time, matriculated SUNY New Paltz student who is either an international student attending SUNY New Paltz or a student who has been accepted to participate in a study abroad program.
Study Abroad in Spain with New Paltz Scholarship
This fund supports students studying abroad - please read the eligibility and preferenced criteria.
The Wiegand Scholarship supports study abroad through the Center for International Programs for students traveling to destinations OTHER THAN Western Europe, New Zealand and Australia.
The Center for International Programs is pleased to offer the SUNY New Paltz Global Ambassadors program fee reduction program to SUNY New Paltz students who study abroad on a fall or spring semester program.
Students who are selected as a SUNY New Paltz Global Ambassador will pay a reduced program fee in addition to current New Paltz tuition. This is a reduced program fee, not a scholarship.
Global Ambassadors are only offered on select SUNY New Paltz study abroad programs. The Global Ambassador program is only open to currently enroll SUNY New Paltz students.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Award amount up to $5,000
The Benjamin A. Gilman offers awards of up to $5,000 for study abroad to U.S. citizen students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding. SUNY New Paltz has been recognized as one of the top recepients of Gilman Scholarships. Application deadlines are in March for summer, fall, and academic year and October for Spring and Summer (early application).
Bridging Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan
Award amount up to $4,000
Offers a scholarship for undergraduates majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be a US citizen or permanent resident and be enrolled as an undergraduate in a college or university in the US. Application deadline is October for spring and April for fall.
David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships
Award amount up to $20,000
Offers a scholarship focused on geographical areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security (outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand). The National Security Education Program (NSEP) enhances opportunities for its award recipients to gain federal employment. Recipients must commit to working in the U.S. federal government for one year after graduation. Application deadlines typically are typically in February.
BUTEX (British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association)
Award amount up to $700
Offers a scholarship that is open to all undergraduate students currently registered at an institution in the USA. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a study abroad or exchange place at a UK university which is BUTEX affiliated. The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university. Application deadlines typically are June.
Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes
Scholarships for U.S. citizen undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. students to participate in beginning, intermediate and advanced level intensive summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers.
Diversity Abroad Network Scholarships
Award amount varies
Offers scholarships for summer study abroad programs, underrepresented students in study abroad, and students studying in Asia. The application deadline is typically April 1.
Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA)
Award amount up to $7,000
Offers scholarships for US undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. A Freeman-ASIA Award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books etc. The application deadline is typically mid-April.
The Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship
Award amount up to $10,000
Offers scholarships for US citizens planning to study abroad for at least four weeks between September and August. Awards for this scholarship are given to up to ten students planning to participate in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program. FEA scholarship recipients can receive up to $10,000 provided by both corporate and private donors committed to increasing study abroad opportunities for dedicated American students. The application deadline is typically mid-January.
GO Overseas Study Abroad Scholarship
Award amount $1,000
Offers scholarships in support of international education. It provides scholarships for students participating in study abroad programs. Scholarships are awarded each year. The scholarship is awarded based on the creativity and analytical thinking displayed through writing samples and/or video submissions. Application deadlines vary, please refer to their website.
JASSO/Japanese Student Service Organization Scholarships

Offers an national award for North American students studying at any Japanese institution. Award varies according to scholarship and Study Abroad Program. Application deadline- You will be contacted by your study abroad program with more information.
Rainbow Scholarship

Award amount varies Offers a scholarship to a LGBTQ+ student who aims to participate in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program. Applicants must meet general FEA scholarship eligibility requirements & preferences. Students interested in being considered for this annual scholarship should indicate this through their application forms. Application deadlines typically are typically in early to mid-November.
Not only are there are a number of campus-based scholarships and fee reductions as well as national and private scholarships available to help fund study abroad. There are excellent search engines that offer scholarship and funding opportunities. These may not only be specific to study abroad but can be applied to your study abroad program.
With a little research, you may find scholarship opportunities through your parents or your own activities. Check to see if any family member's work or civic affiliations offer scholarships to relatives. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce for information on organizations and foundations offering scholarships.

Direct Loan (Subsidized)
Loan amount up to $5,500 per year
The Direct Loan (subsidized) is available to matriculated undergraduate students. Loans are awarded based on need. The FAFSA is used to apply. The loan is subsidized which means no interest accrues while the student is in school.
Direct Loan (Unsubsidized)
Loan amount varies
The Direct Loan (unsubsidized) is available to undergraduate and graduate students. Loans are awarded based on the year of study. The FAFSA is used to apply. Similar to the subsidized loan but is not based on financial need and interest accrues on the loan while the student is enrolled in school.
Parent (PLUS) Loan
Loan amount varies
The Parent (PLUS) Loan is available to credit-worthy parents of financially dependent undergraduate students. Loans are awarded up to the cost of the abroad program. The FAFSA is used to apply. Then the parent(s) will need to login after June 1 to request a Direct PLUS Loan and complete the online credit check and application.
Private Loans
Loan amount varies
Private Loan(s) are available to undergraduate and graduate students - you can apply to any lender of your choice. Loans are awarded based on need. The federal government does not guarantee the loan, interest begins to accrue immediately on receipt of the loan and usually require a credit-worthy co-signer.
