1. How do I apply?
Starting an application is easy! Students must first go to the program brochure page and complete an online application by clicking on the 'Apply Now' button at the top right-hand side. They will create their own personal study abroad webpage and application page.
Note: SUNY New Paltz students sign with their current my.newpaltz.edu username and password. Non-New Paltz students will create a unique password and ID when applying for a program and signing in. Students not currently enrolled at a SUNY campus are not eligible to study abroad through SUNY New Paltz.

2. When can I go?
Deciding when to study abroad can factor on many things: How long do you want to go? Do you want to go for a year, a semester, during the summer or during the winter break? Are there major requirements you need to take at your home campus during a certain semester. It is best to talk with your academic advisor about your 8 semester plan and when study abroad will work for you.

3. How much does study abroad cost?
The cost depends on the type of program that is chosen, the length of stay, the location, etc. Each program brochure page contains a budget sheet detailing what a student will be billed for their program as well as the estimated costs associated with the program.
The amount of personal spending money that students will need for their time abroad depends on their lifestyle choices and spending habits. Each program budget gives estimated costs of living but does not include estimated costs for spending money or additional independent travel, for example.

Yes, all students studying abroad will receive academic credit.
SUNY New Paltz students
For credits to count as major/minor/general education requirements your academic advisor must approve them and the Overseas Academic Course Approval form must be filled out and submitted to Records. This form will be made available upon completion of the study abroad program.

5. Where will I be living during my study abroad?
The housing options depend entirely upon the program that is being offered. Housing can vary from a Residence Hall to a Host Family to a Student Apartment; details about housing can be found on the individual program pages.
6. Do I need a visa to study abroad?
Student visa requirements vary by country; each program brochure page lists whether or not a student will need a student visa.
You will need a passport for any travel outside of America.
7. Is it safe to study abroad?
Health and Safety is a top priority for the Center for International Programs. Information on health and safety is provided to the students in their personal study abroad page through the ‘Learning Content’ and it is discussed at great length during the Pre-Departure Orientation. Learning Content on Health and Safety includes: Emergencies Abroad, Insurance, Medication, Mental Health, Sexual Health, the Law Abroad, and tips for safety while abroad. International health insurance and emergency insurance is a requirement for students on study abroad.
8. Does SUNY New Paltz arrange my travel?
No, SUNY New Paltz does not arrange for student travel, with the exception of a few programs with group flights. For most programs students are responsible for arranging their own travel. If your program has a group flight you will be given the information about purchasing your ticket.

9. I am a non-New Paltz student; can I study abroad on a New Paltz program?
Absolutely! SUNY New Paltz programs are open to all SUNY students. You should talk with your home institution about credit transfers and payments. Unless explicitly stated, SUNY New Paltz programs are only available to students currently enrolled at a SUNY campus.
