1. How do I apply?

Starting an application is easy! Students must first go to the program brochure page and complete an online application by clicking on the 'Apply Now' button at the top right-hand side. They will create their own personal study abroad webpage and application page.

Note: SUNY New Paltz students sign with their current my.newpaltz.edu username and password. Non-New Paltz students will create a unique password and ID when applying for a program and signing in. Students not currently enrolled at a SUNY campus are not eligible to study abroad through SUNY New Paltz.

a. What is the GPA eligibility for study abroad?

GPA eligibility varies from a 2.5 to 3.0 for New Paltz programs, this information can be found on the program pages. Students must be in good academic standing in order to apply and participate in study abroad.
 

b. When should I start planning for my study abroad?

It is never too early to start planning your study abroad, in fact the earlier the better. However you can only apply for your study abroad the semester before.
 

2. When can I go?

Deciding when to study abroad can factor on many things: How long do you want to go? Do you want to go for a year, a semester, during the summer or during the winter break? Are there major requirements you need to take at your home campus during a certain semester. It is best to talk with your academic advisor about your 8 semester plan and when study abroad will work for you.

a. Can freshmen and seniors study abroad?

Freshman or students completing their first year at SUNY New Paltz or their home institution are not typically able to study abroad. However, freshman students are welcome to apply for winter intercession programs during their freshman year and/or a summer program after their first year is completed.
 
Seniors or final-year students are eligible to participate on study abroad programs. However, any student in their final year of study should consult with their study abroad and academic advisors prior to submitting an application to study abroad.
 

3. How much does study abroad cost?

The cost depends on the type of program that is chosen, the length of stay, the location, etc. Each program brochure page contains a budget sheet detailing what a student will be billed for their program as well as the estimated costs associated with the program.

The amount of personal spending money that students will need for their time abroad depends on their lifestyle choices and spending habits. Each program budget gives estimated costs of living but does not include estimated costs for spending money or additional independent travel, for example.

a. What about Financial Aid?

Yes, your financial aid can be applied to your study abroad. Students are advised to visit their financial aid office to inquire about what financial aid they currently receive, if they are eligible to increase existing aid or apply for new financial aid, and learn about how to apply their financial aid funds towards their study abroad program.
 

b. Are there scholarships for study abroad?

University, national, and program-specific scholarships are available for eligible study abroad students. Each scholarship has specific requirements and students should become familiar with their options early on in the study abroad process.
 

4. Will I get credit for studying abroad?

Yes, all students studying abroad will receive academic credit.

SUNY New Paltz students

For credits to count as major/minor/general education requirements your academic advisor must approve them and the Overseas Academic Course Approval form must be filled out and submitted to Records. This form will be made available upon completion of the study abroad program.

If you are a SUNY New Paltz student studying abroad on another SUNY school's program

You must also register at SUNY New Paltz for credits to count as major/minor/general education requirements.

a. Will my grades count towards my GPA?

SUNY New Paltz students 
Grades will be factored into the overall GPA at New Paltz - they are NOT pass/fail.

Non- New Paltz students
Check with the home institution regarding whether overseas grades will be factored into the overall GPA.
 

5. Where will I be living during my study abroad?

The housing options depend entirely upon the program that is being offered. Housing can vary from a Residence Hall to a Host Family to a Student Apartment; details about housing can be found on the individual program pages.
 

6. Do I need a visa to study abroad?

Student visa requirements vary by country; each program brochure page lists whether or not a student will need a student visa.

You will need a passport for any travel outside of America.
 

7. Is it safe to study abroad?

Health and Safety is a top priority for the Center for International Programs. Information on health and safety is provided to the students in their personal study abroad page through the ‘Learning Content’ and it is discussed at great length during the Pre-Departure Orientation. Learning Content on Health and Safety includes: Emergencies Abroad, Insurance, Medication, Mental Health, Sexual Health, the Law Abroad, and tips for safety while abroad. International health insurance and emergency insurance is a requirement for students on study abroad.
 

8. Does SUNY New Paltz arrange my travel?

No, SUNY New Paltz does not arrange for student travel, with the exception of a few programs with group flights. For most programs students are responsible for arranging their own travel. If your program has a group flight you will be given the information about purchasing your ticket.

a. When should I purchase my flight?

You cannot purchase your flight until you have been officially accepted into a program and have confirmed the program dates with your advisor. Once you are an accepted student you will receive more information about dates and purchasing flights.
 

9. I am a non-New Paltz student; can I study abroad on a New Paltz program?

Absolutely! SUNY New Paltz programs are open to all SUNY students. You should talk with your home institution about credit transfers and payments. Unless explicitly stated, SUNY New Paltz programs are only available to students currently enrolled at a SUNY campus.
