Application Process

To be eligible to study abroad, all students must: 

  • Be in good academic and disciplinary standing. 
  • Be a currently matriculated student at a SUNY campus, unless expressly indicated otherwise.
  • Have completed a year of full-time college study, unless expressly indicated otherwise. 
  • Cannot study abroad prior to complete a semester of full-time study at their home institution.
  • Complete a semester of full-time study immediately prior to applying to study abroad. 
  • Complete a semester of full-time study immediately prior to studying abroad.  
  • Meet all program specific requirements. 

First-year students: 

  • Are not eligible to study abroad during their first year, except for specifically designated programs for first-year students. 

Transfer students:  

  • Who have completed an Associate’s Degree may apply to study abroad for their second semester of study for select programs but not a year-long program. 
  • Must complete a semester of full-time study at their home institution prior to studying abroad on any SUNY New Paltz program. 
  • Must complete a year of full-time study at SUNY New Paltz or their home institution prior to studying abroad for a semester, except for students with an Associate's Degree. 
  • Must meet all other eligibility requirements.  

All of the above criteria applies to students enrolled at SUNY New Paltz and all other institutions. The above criteria does not constitute the entire requirements for studying abroad and may change without notice. Failure to maintain eligibility may result in the rescission of approval to study abroad. 

 

The application free of $25 can be paid online.

SUNY New Paltz EOP students may receive a waiver for the application fee by speaking with their EOP advisor. The waiver must be completed prior to paying the application fee and the application deadline. 

 

SUNY New Paltz students can request directly from Records and Registration at my.newpaltz.edu at no cost!
Students at other institutions must request that transcripts be sent directly to the study abroad office (electronic transcripts are preferred). Electronic transcripts requested through Parchment should be sent to studyabroad@newpaltz.edu by selecting "I am sending this order to another individual" (do not select SUNY New Paltz as the recipient). Physical transcripts should be sent to:

Request one academic reference from a faculty member through your online application. References must be received by the application deadline.
 

When composing your Study Statement it is important to address the impact that your study abroad program will have on your academic, professional and personal goals. Specific instructions are listed in the application.

Some key points to keep in mind are:

  • Why have you chosen your country of study? What factors led you to select this country?
  • How will this study abroad program and the coursework you take abroad impact your academic and future professional goals?
