Academic Renewal Opportunities

Academic renewal policies provide structured pathways for students to re-engage with their education after experiencing academic difficulties. These policies acknowledge that personal, financial, or health-related challenges can significantly affect academic performance, and they offer supportive options for students to recover and move forward.

Academic renewal policies include

  1. Academic Success Program - voluntary academic recovery program designed to provide individualized support to students placed on academic warning or academic probation
  2. Academic Forgiveness Policy - Intended to support undergraduate students who have been readmitted after having academic difficulty during previous attendance at SUNY New Paltz. This policy applies to students who have been readmitted with Academic Probation status after being separated between two and six consecutive semesters.
  3. Fresh Start Policy - allows readmitted undergraduate students who have experienced previous academic difficulties an opportunity to return to the New Paltz after an extended absence and exclude previously earned unsatisfactory and failing grades
  4. Retroactive Withdrawal – Committee reviewed full semester withdrawal request. Contact Records and Registration for more information.

Current students can also take advantage of existing tools such as the student-elected S/U grading option, course withdrawal, and late withdrawal to support their academic success during challenging times.
