The Department of Geology supports the Adolescence Education: Earth Science and Earth Science concentration in Early Childhood & Childhood Education programs which are housed in the School of Education, Department of Teaching & Learning. Below are the Earth Science components of those programs (you may also refer to the Undergraduate Catalog):
Physical Geology (GLG201 and GLG211 Physical Geology Lab) provides an introduction to the geological sciences and is recommended for first-year students. Historical Geology (GLG202) should be taken in the following semester. General Chemistry I (CHE201 and CHE211 General Chemistry I Lab) and Calculus I (MAT251, if required) should also be taken in the first year, if possible. A Math Placement Level of 5 (MPL5) is a prerequisite for these majors and can be met by passing Precalculus (MAT181) with a C- or better. Students accepted into a program with a lower MPL must meet this requirement prior to graduation.
Students must earn a grade of C- or better in all courses required for the geology major or minor.
Transfer students should complete as many of the cognate courses as possible before entering SUNY New Paltz - ideally, one year each of college-level chemistry, physics, and calculus should be completed, in addition to a one-year laboratory sequence in geology (equivalent to Physical Geology and Historical Geology). Please also refer to the SUNY Transfer Path for Geology for more details. Additional courses in astronomy and meteorology are highly recommended.
