The Biology program at New Paltz offers students excellent preparation for graduate school, a career in industry, for medical school or for one of the many allied health fields. We offer unparalleled faculty-mentored research opportunities and five different major tracks: cellular and molecular biology; organismal and environmental biology; a general BA track in biology; as well as childhood education/biology and secondary education/biology.

Our modern, research-quality instrumentation enables students to pursue every interest from molecular signaling and environmental conservation to neurophysiology and animal behavior. Recent New Paltz biology grads have gone on to attend some of the top graduate and post-doctoral institutions in the country, as well as obtain positions in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, university research and teaching.

Our mission is to foster human understanding and appreciation of the biological world. We are actively engaged in investigating novel questions, with undergraduate researchers, about basic life processes across all scales—from molecular to global. We aim to provide students with a firm foundation in biological knowledge, inquiry, and scientific discourse and enhance biological literacy among the general public.
