The Journalism major offers students a combination of practical news-gathering skills across print, multimedia and digital platforms and an investigation of the historical, ethical, theoretical and literary contexts of journalism. Students learn not only how to put together a news story in a variety of media platforms but also the reason why our society needs news.
In addition to learning about writing and editing print stories, Journalism majors prepare for the realities of the workplace by composing, shooting, editing, and producing their stories in our state-of-the-art computer facility. The major's core required courses build foundational skills in writing, reporting, editing, ethics and multimedia storytelling.
The major culminates in an advanced editing class in which students edit stories and multimedia from Journalism courses for The Little Rebellion, the department's online news magazine, and a capstone seminar in which students research, pitch, report, and produce an in-depth multimedia reporting project. Students also gain professional experience in required internships at professional news outlets, including The Legislative Gazette, a public affairs publication based in Albany and run by our department.
Students may not receive a grade lower than "C-" in any course considered part of the student's major program.
