Records & Registration

Post matriculation registration procedure

The student should consult with the appropriate office to determine the impact taking courses at other institutions on financial aid, repeat course and maximum transfer credits allowances (70 credits from 2 year and 90 credits from 4 year institutions).

The student should consult with academic advisor prior to registering.

The following policies apply:

  • The student must have a minimum New Paltz GPA of 2.0.
  • The transfer institution must be accredited.
  • Post matriculated credits may apply to the overall 120 credit graduation requirement. A grade of C- or better must be earned in the course to receive credit.

Procedure (Read these instructions completely before starting)

Step 1: The student checks College Course Equivalency Database  to identify courses that are already articulated at New Paltz and have been determined to meet specific requirements.

Step 2:  The student meets with the academic advisor to determine if taking the post matriculated course is appropriate.

Step 3:  Register for the course at the other college

Step 4:  Complete the course

For courses taken internationally only: If the course was taken through New Paltz Center for International Programs (CIP) or an affilitated SUNY CIP, proceed to Step 5.  All other international transfer credits must first be submitted by the student to a member organization accessed through the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).

Step 5:  Send the official transcript from the other college to SUNY New Paltz Records & Registration. Allow 2-3 weeks for processing once the transcript is received.  Check the progress report to be sure that the course has transferred and is properly noted.

  • A grade of C- or better must be earned in the course to receive credit. Only the credits, not the grades, will transfer. The student is responsible for having the official transcript sent to Records & Registration when the course(s) is/are completed.

  • The advisor must submit a transfer articulation workflow when the course already appears on the New Paltz transcript, to articulate any unarticulated courses.  Articulated courses should populate on progress report as identified in the database requirements without further action after the transcript is processed by Records & Registration.
  • If a course is listed as "SABxxx" it may require a progress report amendment to be counted as a degree or major requirement.
