Adhering to your program's admission deadline is crucial to the success of your application. Apply early to ensure timely application review and early decisions. General application deadlines are the following:

We close admission for international students residing outside of the U.S. who have already begun their application on Dec. 1 for Spring (January) term, and June 15 for Fall (August) term. Please note that these deadlines are not applicable to international students residing within the U.S. at the time of admission wishing to transfer their I-20 to SUNY New Paltz. No new applications will be able to be created or accepted after November 15.

SUNY New Paltz reserves the right to alter application due dates without notice.

Some programs have earlier deadlines for their applications. Please review the chart below according to your program, if applicable:

The basic requirement for admission to a graduate program is a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.

Students must submit translations and credential evaluations of their transcripts by a member organization of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. There may be exceptions to this requirement by program; contact gradadmissions@newpaltz.edu for more information. 

Note for Indian applicants: SUNY New Paltz will consider a three-year bachelor's degree from India as equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor's degree if:  

• The three-year degree was earned in Division or Class I at universities accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of A. 
• All other three-year degrees from India will be considered as the equivalent of three years of undergraduate study.

Prospective international students for whom English is not the native language, and any applicant whose undergraduate degree is from a country where English is not the main language of instruction, are required to demonstrate English language proficiency. Review the chart below for methods of demonstrating language proficiency. 

NOTE: Individual departments may require a score different than the general acceptable score, so students should consult their departments.

Other ways to demonstrate English language proficiency:

• A certificate of English Language Proficiency from the Haggerty English Language Program at SUNY New Paltz.
• Official transcripts indicating a college degree from a U.S. institution. If the degree was earned more than three years prior to the submission of a graduate application, then the student must provide acceptable TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or DET scores. 

Conditional admission for applicants with limited English proficiency 

In the event that you are offered admission having only demonstrated a marginal level of English Language Proficiency, you will be required to have English language instruction and to sit for a placement exam upon arrival at SUNY New Paltz. The exam includes:

• A test of grammar, reading and listening comprehension.
• An oral interview
• A writing sample. 

Based upon your performance on the exam, you will be required to register for additional English language instruction. All students must demonstrate the required level of English proficiency before being allowed to begin graduate coursework.

As an international student, you are required to submit additional documents in order to receive your I-20 Certificate of Eligibility. You will need this document prior to scheduling your F-1 (student) visa interview at your local consulate.

Log into your applicant portal to upload documents your financial documents (information below). Completing this prior to your acceptance will help ensure issuance of your I-20 Certificate of Eligibility is not delayed. You can also upload them after you have been accepted, but your I-20 cannot be issued until the documents have been uploaded and reviewed.

Please only upload the documents to your application portal. You do not need to email these separately. The I-20 can only be issued after you are accepted by your academic program.

Bank Statement Requirements:

• Bank Statement and/or Bank letter on official bank letterhead must be issued within the last 6 months. The bank statement must show available funds for 1-year of study. If you are unsure of the amount you must document, please contact us at international@newpaltz.edu to confirm.
• Funding can be from personal savings, family, or a sponsor. You may have multiple sources of funding.
• If the funds are not in your name, please read and complete the International Student Financial Statement and upload it with supporting documentation. If you have multiple sponsors, please have each fill out a separate copy of this form.
• Make sure to keep a set of original financial documents for when you apply for your F-1 visa.

Your enrollment process is nearly complete. Your final steps are to:

• Log into your applicant portal and complete the Decision Reply Form
• Submit your enrollment deposit of $100, which is applied towards your first term's tuition.
• Connect with your advisor to build your schedule.
• Register for classes. Students will receive instructions via email about how and when they will register for classes depending on their academic program.
