Academics: Concentrations: Performance

The Performance Concentration at New Paltz empowers bold, versatile actors—mind, body, and voice—to take the stage with confidence and craft.

Rooted in collaboration and ensemble practice, the program hones your skills through dynamic training in text, character, scene study, period styles, and heightened language—drawing from a wide range of contemporary acting techniques.

For those with a passion for Musical Theatre, courses like Voice for Musical Theatre, Musical Theatre Workshop, and American Musical Theatre help you integrate vocal technique, movement, and a deep understanding of the art form’s legacy.

You’ll develop a powerful, expressive instrument through Speech for the Stage—focusing on vocal health, clarity, and presence—and in Movement, you’ll awaken the body’s connection to story, space, and ensemble.

Electives like The Mindful Performer blend yoga, meditation, and consent practices, building resilience, presence, and self-awareness—onstage and off.

You’ll also have the opportunity to create original work through collaborative, cross-disciplinary creation in Devising Theatre.

The journey culminates in Senior Seminar, a career-launching capstone where you'll sharpen your audition skills, connect with industry insights, and prepare for what’s next.

Throughout the program, you’ll cultivate a dynamic, embodied performance practice—and the fearless presence to bring it to any stage.
