Academics: Concentrations: Recording and Electronic Music Concentration

Recording and Electronic Music Concentration

The Recording and Electronic Music area at SUNY New Paltz offers students hands-on access to professional studios, industry-standard equipment, and collaborative learning environments designed to support creativity, technical growth, and artistic exploration. From large-scale ensemble recording to electronic sound design and media production, our facilities empower students to develop real-world skills while shaping their own creative voice.

The concentration emphasizes the development of technical proficiency, critical listening skills, and creative application through a curriculum centered on hands-on, project-based learning. Students engage with current tools and practices in recording, electronic music, game audio, live audio production, and music and audio for media.

As part of the concentration, students complete a senior capstone project that demonstrates integrative learning and is developed in consultation with a faculty advisor. In addition to coursework in recording arts and music technology, students fulfill the core requirements of the Music Department, including music theory, ear training, concert attendance, and music appreciation. The concentration prepares students for entry into professional work in music and audio-related fields, interdisciplinary creative practice, and graduate study in music, sound, or media-related disciplines.

Learn by Doing

At SUNY New Paltz, Recording Arts and Music Technology students gain practical experience with professional tools while working in collaborative, creative environments. Whether recording live ensembles, designing electronic soundscapes, or producing audio for media, students graduate with the skills, confidence, and creative vision needed for today’s evolving music and audio industries.

Recording Studio & Concert Hall Connection

Our primary recording studio is directly connected to the large Shepard Recital Hall concert space, giving students the unique opportunity to record full ensembles including choir, jazz bands, wind ensembles, and classical performances. Featuring both Steinway and Yamaha grand pianos, the hall provides a rich acoustic environment ideal for high-quality classical and contemporary recordings.

The studio’s open and flexible layout allows students to configure sessions for a wide range of musical styles and ensemble sizes. Students regularly collaborate with other courses, performers, and student organizations across campus, creating a dynamic, interdisciplinary recording experience that mirrors professional studio workflows.

Electronic Music Studio

The Electronic Music Studio is a creative laboratory dedicated to sound design, synthesis, and experimentation. Designed for hands-on learning, this space supports our electronic music curriculum by introducing students to the fundamentals of synthesizers, signal flow, sequencing, and modular systems.

Students work with a diverse collection of analog, digital, and modular instruments—learning how sounds are built from the ground up while developing personal workflows and sonic identities. This studio is an ideal environment for exploration, innovation, and creative risk-taking.

MUS350 Computer and Electronic Music and MUS 351 Advanced Computer and Electronic Music is taught by Robert Lukomski.
