Areas of Study: Minor in Music

Many students at SUNY New Paltz choose to minor in music. It is a great option for a student who is passionate about music, performance or composition, but who chooses to major in another field. Our program aims to broaden, as well as deepen, students' understanding of the art of music and offers some flexibility, as outlined in the requirements below.

Music minors complete a portion of the core music curriculum (excluding sight singing): ensemble participation, piano skills, music theory, and music history. For their electives, they may opt to take applied lessons, courses in recording and electronic music, in jazz improvisation, or composition.

PLEASE NOTE: Students who minor in music in or after fall 2024 will follow a newly revised 18-credit plan of study. Learn more in the Undergraduate Catalog.

For degree requirements for the minor in music prior to fall 2024, please see the 25-credit plan of study in the Undergraduate Catalog.
