Chad Ferber, Collections Manager / Archivist
Location
On-site (Boiceville, New York)
The Company
The Al Held Foundation is charged with the stewardship of the art and creative legacy of abstract painter Al Held (1928–2005). The Foundation’s mission is to foster the appreciation and advancement of modern art and the public’s understanding of Held’s contribution to art of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. In the last decade the Foundation has facilitated the organization of exhibitions, promoted scholarly research, and conducted educational programs in the United States and internationally.
The Foundation is located in the former home and studio of Al Held in the Catskill Mountains region of New York State. The property, a former dairy farm purchased by Held in 1965, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As a mid-sized artist endowed foundation, the Al Held Foundation employs a staff of five and maintains the art collection, archive, and historic property for public and educational programs. For more information, please visit www.alheldfoundation.org.
The Intern will gain experience working in a dynamic emerging cultural field. Artist endowed foundations are a growing presence in the international art community creating new professional opportunities for archivists, registrars, collection managers, educators, curators, and others with diverse creative, educational, and scholarly interests oriented around the visual arts.
The Role
The Intern will contribute to the stewardship of the comprehensive records of the career of Al Held and gain valuable hands-on experience with physical and digital record management and art cataloguing best practices. The Intern’s primary role will be to process object files and cross reference with the Foundation’s FileMaker database. The Intern will be assigned a dedicated area of the archive in which to manage the workflow. Specific tasks include data entry, fact-checking/research, scanning, and others as needed.
The Internship is on-site only. The Intern must be able to drive; no transportation is available. The Intern must be able to commit a minimum of ten hours over two days a week. The specific workdays and hours are flexible so long as they occur within the Foundation’s regular business schedule of Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. The Intern will be paid an hourly rate of $16.
The duration is from late January/early February through May, though the internship may be extended per mutual agreement. There will be an initial onboarding meeting via video call prior to the start of the Internship. Once the Intern is familiar with the procedures of the project, they will be able to work independently. The Intern will be in ongoing communication with the supervisor, and able to ask questions and seek support as needed.
The Candidate
The ideal Intern will make a valuable contribution towards the Foundation’s long-term goal of completing a catalogue raisonné (catalogue of complete works). The ideal candidate will be resourceful, attentive to detail, proactive, efficient, and a quick study. Specific requirements include:
