Major in Art History (36 Credits)

Required courses

ARH201 Art of the Western World I - 3 Credits
ARH202 Art of the Western World II - 3 Credits
ARH456 Art History: Theory and Approaches - 3 Credits

Electives--Each major candidate must complete at least one course in each of the following six areas:

  • Ancient art
  • Medieval art
  • Renaissance and Baroque art
  • Eighteenth- or Nineteenth-Century art
  • Twentieth-Century art
  • Asian Art

Grades of "C-" will not be counted towards the major. The course, Introduction to the Visual Arts, does not count towards the major.

Minor in Art History (21 Credits)

The 21 credits required for a minor in Art History may be distributed over a broad spectrum of art history courses through advisement or may be concentrated in one or more areas that relate to the student's major field and career goals. The required seven (7) art history courses must include at least four (4) upper-division courses and at least three (3) courses not already used to satisfy the requirements of the student's major.

 

Art History Concentration (Early Childhood and Childhood Education) (30 Credits)

This is a thirty-credit major with required courses distributed over the following Art History courses:

ARH201 Art of the Western World I - 3 Credits
ARH202 Art of the Western World II - 3 Credits
ARH358 Modern Art, 1900-1970 - 3 Credits

Two Asian Art Courses (Select from ARH 340, ARH 341, ARH 342, ARH 343, ARH 344, ARH 345, ARH 378, and ARH 452)

ARH210 Images and Ideas Asian Art - 3 Credits
ARH340 The Arts of Early China - 3 Credits
ARH341 The Arts of Later China - 3 Credits
ARH342 The Arts of Japan - 3 Credits
ARH343 Japanese Arts of the Edo Period - 3 Credits
ARH344 History of Buddhist Art - 3 Credits
ARH345 Art in Modern China - 3 Credits
ARH378 Sacred Spaces, Divine Images - 3 Credits
ARH452 Chinese Painting: Figure in Landscape - 3 Credits

And ARH382 American Art - 3 Credits  OR  ARH420 Art of the Hudson Valley - 3 Credits

And the following Art courses:

ARS105 Intro to Studio Art - 3 Credits

AND

ARS110 Introduction to Ceramics - 3 Credits  OR  ARS120 Introduction to Metal - 3 Credits  OR  ARS170 Introduction to Sculpture - 3 Credits

And two electives (6 credits) of Art History.
